Affordable Accommodations for your Getaway…
Halpino is the Value Proposition of the Duff Green Family of Boutique Hotels in Historic Vicksburg, MS. Located at 1001 Locust Street Halpino is two blocks from the back door of the Duff Green Mansion. Built in 1986 in the Williamsburg motif as a law office by three Vicksburg attorneys the building was converted to overnight accommodation in 2022 by Harley and Rick Caldwell who added five ensuite bathrooms all with walk-in showers and coverted the reception areas to sitting and eating areas.
Rooms are priced at the per diem rate for the US Army Corps of Engineers travelers during the week and still offer an affordable option on the weekends. Travelers can choose to add a daily add on for breakfast and pool privileges when in season at the Duff Green Mansion. This add on includes the world famous tour of the historic Duff Green built in 1856 which served as a hospital during the siege and may or may not have a ghost lurking here or there.
The five bedrooms at Halpino are named for famous Mississippians. Madam CJ Walker was born just across the river in Louisiana but moved to Vicksburg as a young adult. When she suffered health issues that affected her hair she invented a hair tonic for African American women. It sold like hot cakes and she became one of the first female millioniers in the country. Her bedroom is on the first floor and offers a King bed. Across the hall is the King himself from Tupelo, MS, Elvis Presley. Need we say more? His room has a Queen bed. Also on the first floor is the Tennesse Williams room. Tennesse lived in New Orleans while he wrote most of his work but was born in Columbus, MS. This room has a four poster King bed. Upstairs rooms are named for two Mississippi writers that could never be left out, William Faulkner from Oxford who wrote The Sound and the Fury while working as the night watchman at the Oxford Power Plant and John Grisham who scribbled A Time To Kill while practicing law, closing loans in north Mississippi. Books and Law books are scattered about Halpino.
The name Halpino comes from the plantation owned by Harley Halpin Caldwell’s grandfather’s grandfather, Eric William Wallin and his son-in-law, John F. Halpin at Eagle Lake in North Warren County.
